"Reducing Space Mission Cost" (RSMC)

For additional information about any of the courses, or to inquire about holding a course at your organization, or joining a public course at Microcosm, contact Julie Jackson at jjackson@smad.com or 310-219-2700. We'd be pleased to discuss it with you.

This course is offered in 3 versions, depending on the needs of your organization. All are highly interactive and are taught by Dr. James Wertz, the creator of the original SMAD book and course and initiator of much of the current interest in Responsive Space. In all of the courses, Dr. Wertz takes you step-by-step, through the complete process of creating dramatically lower cost space missions. This is a very practical course that explains how and why the space program got to where it is, the principal approaches that have worked for other space projects and why, how to find the right balance for your organization, and how to get the process started of genuinely Doing More for Less.

General Course Description

"Design of Low-Cost Space Missions" 5-day short course (38 instruction hours)

This course covers all of the material taught in the full 1-semester academic course, most recently presented as a televised for-credit course with participants from industry, DoD, and NASA centers throughout the US. Relative to the shorter summary courses, it provides more in-depth assessment, more details, technologies, and processes applicable to each of the elements of a space mission (system, spacecraft, payload, launch, ground segment, and operations) and more extensive discussion of alternative approaches and problem solving. For the list of topics for the 5-day course, click here.

"Reducing Space Mission Cost" 2-day short course

This is an abbreviated version of the full 1-semester course. It covers the entire process why reducing cost is hard, examples of both right and wrong approaches, and how to go about changing the culture of the space business, but omits many of the details on reducing cost on specific mission elements and technical details on cost modeling, learning curves, satellite coverage, and specific technologies to concentrate on the core elements. "Reducing Space Mission Cost" 1-day summary

This is a 1-day summary of the process of dramatically reducing space mission cost, how we got to the current state of costing too much, taking too long, with major cost and schedule overruns on top, and how we go about changing the culture of space to get back to an efficient, effective, much more responsive and lower cost space program.
