During initial testing of Scorpius engine S/N002 on Dec. 23, 1993, the LOX line ruptured causing the spectacular flame shown here.
Fortunately, the equipment is robust and designed for low-cost, rapid testing. The LOX line was repaired during the evening and testing
S/N002 tests were successfully completed the next day. These tests were conducted at a private test range near San Jose, CA. The total cost
of fabricating and testing two engines was less than $30,000. The design being tested is the 5,000 lb vacuum thrust engine (with a
shortened nozzle for sea level testing), to be used in the sub-orbital vehicles and the Liberty Light-Lift launcher.
